Marching band / outdoor parade / DCI mono fold: field, pit, crowd, and announce checklist

Field mics, front ensemble (pit), crowd, and announce beds feel huge in the booth and on stadium wedges. On parade PA, DCI broadcast, or phone livestream, brass body and battery attack often thin or cancel against parallel paths that carry the same energy a few milliseconds later. That is usually polarity, path priority, and a stereo field bed that was never folded before send. Fix path priority and small delays first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds before mono fold.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a marching-band compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for mic placement or mono audition of the PA or broadcast bus. Path priority and polarity first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.

What marching band / outdoor mono failure sounds like

Fast mono audition (about 60 seconds)

  1. Solo the PA / broadcast / mix bus (not only booth headphones). Flip a utility to mono.
  2. A/B field muted vs open under pit/crowd. Note what disappears: brass body, battery attack, woodwind detail.
  3. Solo pairs: field vs pit, music vs crowd, stereo field bed vs mono fold.
  4. Check correlation on the delivery bus, then with music muted vs full.

Order of operations (before spectral phase rotation)

1. Polarity between field, pit, and crowd paths

Flip field vs pit, or music vs crowd, when body or battery attack return immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase. Related: brass / horn section, sports / stadium.

2. Small delay align spots to the hero field image

Pit and spot mics often arrive earlier or later than the main field array. A few samples of delay (or nudge to the hero field image) often restores body better than any widener.

3. One hero music image to the PA or broadcast bus

Do not send every field, pit, spot, and crowd path all hot into the PA or broadcast. Pick a hero music image (often the main field array), keep extras muted or low. Parallel stacks are classic hollow-body on phone fold. Related: live FOH.

4. Prefer hero field as the body; quieter pit / spot color

Pit and spots should color detail, not replace the hero field for the broadcast mix. If every spot sits at full level under loud field, mono fold almost always hollows body. Pull spots first.

5. Skip wideners and Haas on field beds before fold

Short-delay width and stereo imagers make booth headphones huge and phones hollow. Keep critical low end and battery body centered for PA and broadcast.

6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights

If a stereo field bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B, rotator bypassed vs engaged.

Parade / DCI / stadium checklist (to send)

1. Label field vs pit vs crowd vs announce paths

Name field arrays, pit, spots, crowd, and announce so operators know what hits the PA or broadcast. Ambiguous stacks get left open and comb on fold.

2. Mono-check delivery bus alone, then with full music

Solo brass body and battery in mono. Then open woodwind detail and crowd in mono. Note fights between spot color and hero field.

3. Watch TV, radio, PA, and phone destinations

Most remote viewers and many parade listeners hear mono or near-mono. Guides: sports / stadium, broadcast delivery.

4. Optional null / mono workflow before show

Host-agnostic habit before you go live or print: master bus mono checklist.

When NOT to use PHIXER here

Quick path: Solo delivery bus in mono → polarity field vs pit/crowd → delay-align spots → one hero field image → quieter pit under hero → skip Haas/imagers → mono-check with full music → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation on a field bed → fold again for PA / broadcast / parade send.
